Day 1 can be summarised by a general school report of ‘could do better’. Players who had been in sparkling form in the lead up to the Championships found it impossible to repeat their low scores. It was left to John Stockings (76), Andy Ferguson (77) and Dave Allen ’746′ (78) to lead the way.
Day 2 dawned with many hoping for that low round to get them back in the mix. One contender, Eric King, had seen this scenario many times before and this year went about his work in a quiet, yet determined manner. Having committed to a swing change with Jamie earlier this year, were all the bits in the right order? It was to be a tense afternoon.
Day 1 leader Stockings was holding it together, while Lee Lawrence was making a change from the pack; 1 under for the front 9. The RAF ‘money’ had been on Gary Wilkinson prior to the event, he too was showing good form. At this stage there were many questions, with even more answers!!
Reports from the buggy had Stockings, Wilkinson and King within a shot for much of the back 9; who would remain calm to claim the trophy?
Suddenly news broke; John had fallen away on the 17th and was out of contention. Eric, who had made a great up and down for birdie on the 15th was a shot clear of Gary Wilkinson – a par for the title; Eric cleared his throat ready for the tee shot on 18……it clipped a tree; aren’t they meant to be 90% air? A bogey was to be the best Eric could muster; it was a Playoff – the crowd were buzzing.
Under the watchful gaze of many members, both struck perfect tee shots off the 1st, leading to tap in Par’s. Incredibly both then found the bunker on the 2nd hole; Gary splashing out nearer than Eric to take a 1 shot lead down the 3rd playoff hole, the 18th. This time Eric launched his drive high over the trees, could he stage a comeback? – a sweetly struck iron found the front of the green, but Gary was closer, the crowd around the green held their breath as his 8 iron sailed towards the pin, but it was short….. and found the bunker. Gary, unable to escape at the first attempt, pitched from the back of the green – how things can change, Eric suddenly had 2 putts to win, you could hear a pin drop. Eric stood over his 15ft putt, would his considerable years of experience tell……., you bet! a fine lag putt to inches secured the 2011 Club Championship, at the ripe age of 62.
A tremendous finish, both players along with the gathered crowd adjourned to the 19th for the prize presentation.
